AFI DALLAS Joins the Sundance Film Festival Frenzy!
Even as AFI DALLAS announced its first films for the upcoming 2008 Festival, several staff members travelled to snowy Park City, Utah to check out films and make connections at one of the United States’ most prestigious film festivals.
Five of the AFI DALLAS team, including Artistic Director and CEO Michael Cain and members of the Programming, Operations and Development departments attended a variety of screenings, including opening night film In Bruges starring Colin Farrell and the world premiere of U2 3D with Bono, Al Gore and Robert Redford in attendance.
“Sundance is a wonderfully frenzied experience, with screenings, parties and celebrities around every corner,” said AFI DALLAS Managing Director Greg Brown. “We had a great time seeing movies, meeting with filmmakers and visiting Sundance venues. It was a special treat to share the experience with AFI DALLAS Board members Ruth Mutch, Adrienne Faulkner and Brandt Wood.”
At press time, programmers were continuing to lock deals with a variety of Sundance films and filmmakers. Stay tuned for announcements soon about more films that AFI DALLAS will screen—many in the only opportunity North Texas audiences will have to see them.

AFI DALLAS FILMS GARNER AWARDS ATTENTION
It’s awards season in Hollywood…and an awards season like the industry has never seen. With the writers on strike, the Golden Globes were reduced to a press conference, and there is talk that the Academy Awards might also have to adjust their ceremony if producers and writers don’t come to agreement. However delivered though, the results are interesting to fans of the AFI DALLAS International Film Festival. Several actors and movies from the inaugural 2007 Festival are collecting statuettes—a testimony to the excellence of films that our Programming team presented last year. This critical acclaim bodes well for the 2008 line-up.
Here are a few of the awards and nominations already picked up by films that screened in the 2007 AFI DALLAS International Film Festival:
Julie Christie in Away From Her
Julie Christie is unforgettable as an Alzheimer’s patient whose husband of 40 years must deal with the sacrifice and adjustment necessary as she moves into a nursing home. This beautiful movie, directed by Sarah Polley, was the Closing Night film in the 2007 Festival. Some of the honors Christie has received are: a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama and Best Actress prizes from our own Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association and the New York Film Critics Circle.
Marion Cotillard in La Vie En Rose
In La Vie En Rose, Marion Cotillard does not just play…she becomes…Edith Piaf. Cotillard’s performance as the chanteuse who emerges from poverty into a worldwide start has garnered several awards and nominations, including: a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy as well as awards from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the Palm Springs Film Festival and the Seattle Film Festival.
And Queen Latifah also walked away with a Golden Globe for her performance in Life Support, a movie co-hosted by DIFFA DALLAS at last year’s Festival.
Documentaries have received acclaim as well. Both Operation Homecoming and War/Dance are on the short list for the Academy Award for Best Documentary. And Richard Berge has been nominated for a Writers Guild Award for his work on The Rape of Europa.
So make sure you mark your calendars now for March 27-April 6 and the 2008 AFI DALLAS International Film Festival. It will be your first chance to see the films everyone is sure to be talking about during next year’s awards season.
